Directions: Sift white flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together. Add whole-wheat flour and nuts and mix well. Beat egg slightly. Add milk and melted shortening. Combine with dry ingredients, stirring only enough to blend. Place in a well-greased loaf pan. Bake until golden brown in moderate oven (350°F.) for 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from pan. Cool before slicing. Yield: 1 large or 2 small loaves.
Fruit bread: Substitute 1 cup chopped dates, raisins, prunes, or figs for nuts.
Honey nut bread: Use honey instead of sugar.
Orange nut bread: Substitute 1/2 cup chopped candied orange peel for Vi cup chopped nuts.
