Main Course - Meat English Beef Stew
English Beef Stew
Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds shin of beef
4 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 onions, sliced thin
1 tablespoon cooking fat or salad oil
4 small carrots, diced
1 cup boiling water
Directions:
Have beef cut low down through shin bone. Remove meat from bone and cut into 2-inch square pieces. Roll meat in flour seasoned with salt and pepper. Fry onions in hot fat until golden brown and place in large casserole or bean pot. Brown beef on all sides in same fat and add to onions. Add boiling water to pan in which beef was browned. Simmer a few minutes. Add carrots and boiling hot gravy to meat and onions. Cover closely and place in very slow oven (250°F.) 4 to 5 hours. Serves 4 to 5.
